Magnetic storage capabilities have been in the distant future for decades. But they've finally arrived. DVD drives will be available in all DVD players as early as 2001. Using a DVD drive in the Sega Saturn and Sega Genesis may add a few years. The first BD drive will be available in December for about US $100. The Blu-Ray disc drives will subsequently start appearing in high-end DVD players.
SACD (pronounced 'Sac-Dee') stands for Super Audio CD. It is a medium for audio recorded at 24 bit/96 kHz stereo quality, and it was originally intended for use with CD players. SACD players can play any disc (CD-DA, CD-ROM, DVD-Audio, SACD, and Blu-Ray) that supports the DVD spec.
Because SACD uses two different encoding schemes for compression, there's a bit of a spaghetti-cable issue. SACD First Format (CEN-STD-732E-2) uses PCM (pulse code modulation) at 16 bit/44.1 kHz and uses a lossy Dolby Digital (AC-3 or E-AC-3) encoding on top of it. SACD Second Format (CEN-STD-747E-1) uses PCM at 44.1 kHz and uses Dolby Digital 7.1 or Dolby TrueHD. (5.1 is the highest surround sound sampled this way so Dolby TrueHD is the best SACD format.) SACD Second format can also transmit 16-bit PCM at 48 kHz or 24-bit PCM at 96 kHz, and it supports Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, Dolby Digital Surround, Dolby Surround EX, Dolby Super Audio, Dolby Digital EX (48 k), Dolby E, DTS-Audio (24-bit), DTS SCD, and AAC-LD. d2c66b5586
